Thesis day in the animal kingdom. So like us....

Thesis Day in the animal kingdom. So like us….

This weekend, there are two things happening (memorial day, amazing weather) and one thing emphatically not happening (your thesis). The three day weekend right after the thesis deadline is a pretty sweet deal. Also, on the day I turned in my thesis, I found $40 in a parking lot. I’m just saying, good things can happen this weekend.

The MAPH office has been looking forward to the three-day weekend for a while, and we’ve put together out thoughts on the best way to spend it – read on for suggestions!

Maren

Morton Arboretum: You need a friend with a car but it is big enough to get away from the crowds of children at the visitor center and hike around.

Grosse Point Lighthouse: Visit Evanston, there is a little beach, a lighthouse to tour, and you get out of Hyde Park!

Brunch at Ann Sather: this is easy to get to on public transportation then spend some time in the neighborhood. However for the best Swedish brunch go to Tre Kronor.

If you are like me you will want to spend as many of your hours playing video games as possible. Luckily, you can do that and be social (if you so choose) at the following places:
Wormhole – A coffee shop in Wicker Park with an NES in it. They also have a replica of the DeLorean from Back to the Future!! Easily accessible via the Blue line.
Bad Cats: because other pinball games are for cowards.

Logan Arcade – An arcade bar on Western/Fullerton, they have a fantastic selection of classic games and some of the coolest/most terrifying pinball you’ve ever seen. For example, Bad Cats.

Another alternative would be to get some art—I recommend the current exhibit called “The Art of Edward Gorey” at the Loyola University Museum of Art. They’ve got an incredible collection of his original drawings.

If you are down for a longer (and more, um, athletic) day trip, take the South Shore Line down to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore for a day of hiking around on the dunes. If you are feeling extra ambitious, you can take the train to the Dune Park station and head 7-ish miles south to the Beverly Shores station, which looks like a child’s imagined version of an actual train station. If you take this journey, you will need a beer and a burger at Bartlett’s before heading back.

Another adventurous plan: take a bike south to 3 Floyds Brewing Company in Munster, Indiana or Flossmoor Station in Flossmoor, Illinois. (I know someone who did both in one day, but I’m not sure I recommend that.)

Yard sales! Head north to Ukrainian Village or Logan Square for brunch and follow the signs, or, if you like to plan, scout ahead on Craigslist. Yes, you may be trying to get rid of things if you are planning to leave Chicago, but it is always fun to look!

1. Do you, boo. If that means sleeping for 24 hours and eating 10 packs of cookies, now is the time.

2. Absorb as much Vitamin D as possible before you head back to the library. For Hyde Parkers, the 57th Street Beach is easily in reach; for others, the Oak Street Beach is remarkably close to downtown attractions (like all the shopping you’ve been meaning to do).

3. After picking up some amazing (and inexpensive) chile relleno tacos at Tacos Erendira in Bridgeport, visit Palmisano Park (formerly known as Stearns Quarry) for an amazing view of downtown.

The building is also really, really, ridiculously goodlooking.

OK, I mean, ideally I would say get out of Chicago altogether this weekend. Short of that, though, my advice would be to take a good long trip on the purple line. If you’re taking Maren’s advice about the Grosse Point Lighthouse, then you’ll also be within a mile of the Baha’i House of Worship, which is the oldest surviving Baha’i temple in the world (it was completed in 1953, but hey, Americans have to take “oldest” wherever we can get it).

Food/drink-wise, it’s hard to beat Big Star. They have delicious tacos. They have, like, a million whiskeys. There’s invariably a wait for tables, but sitting around with some choice bourbon is a pretty good way to pass the time, especially if you’re not filled with anxiety about how you could be working on your thesis right now.
