Hey Guys! It is almost exactly a month until the MAPH year begins, and we in the office are incredibly excited about it! We will continue to send you emails about meet-ups and a couple of events before Colloquium begins. But for you convenience/peace of mind/proof that this is really happening, below is a schedule of the first week of Colloquium. This is just to give you an idea of what these two weeks will look like. But please email us (lbryan@uchicago.edu and matthewcstone@uchicago.edu) if you have any questions or definitely pop into the office (Classics 117) whenever you arrive.

Brief Explanation: MAPH begins two weeks before the start of fall quarter—we lovingly call this period of time “Colloquium.” These two weeks are a mix of orientation sessions (on health and wellness, career services, etc.), social events and outings, and classwork, in both the lectures and meetings with your subgroup of MAPH, called a Precept. During Colloquium, you will have a lecture almost everyday. You will also have reading to do before Colloquium begins, but that information will come later and is not to be stressed about.

I promise we’ll also have vegetarian options!

Quick Outline of Dates and Times:

Sept. 14th- Opening BBQ and Film Screening (the movie is TBA). Lasts from 3 pm to 8 pm.

Sept. 15th- The day begins with a Mentor Brunch, in which you meet the MAPH Office and share bagels and schmear with your two devoted, heart-of-gold mentors. The Mentor Brunch will go from 10 to 11 am. In the afternoon, you will have Core Lecture from 1-2:20 pm.* Later in the afternoon, there will be another lecture from MAPH’s Writing Advisor, Jeff McMahon, about adapting your writing to graduate level study.

*1-2:20 is the time of all Core Lectures during the two weeks of Colloquium

Sept 16th- Orientation/Info Session from 10 to 11:30 am. Core Lecture in the afternoon. After Core, there will be a tour of Ratner Athletic Center at 2:45.

Sept 17th- Orientation/Info Session from 10 to 10:30 am. Core Lecture in the afternoon. After Core, you’ll have your first Precept Meeting, from 2:30 until 4 pm.

Sept 18th- We get an extensive, invaluably helpful tour of the Library and its resources, from 10 to 11 am. Core Lecture in the afternoon.

Sept 19th- This is the end of the first week! It is exciting, and tiring, and wonderful. There is another Info Session in the morning, from 10 to 11 am. There is no Core Lecture this day. Instead, there will be another Precept Meeting from 2:30 to 4pm. Straight from that meeting, you and your precept group will go to Social Hour, which is an informal event we have every Friday. It has free food and drink and is a nice chance to continue meeting people.

Week Two is pretty similar, but with less stuff in the morning. This second week is a good chance to orient yourself to U of C and to Chicago in all, perhaps taking the mornings to explore or maybe just to unpack all those books we told you not to pack but you probably did anyways because you love them. Fair enough!

Keep in mind, too, that we are planning different events both within and outside of Hyde Park that we will be blogging and emailing about as the time gets closer.

Until then…
